The advantages of knowing Holy Scripture - I believe it has become a NECESSITY -  are several:
  • Jesus says His words are Spirit and life.
  • Quoting Moses, Jesus reminds His followers that we don't live by bread alone but by every word of God.
  • St Paul tells us that faith comes from hearing (or reading) the Word of God.
  • St James tells us the Word of God has the power to save our souls.
  • Again, St Paul tells us that the Word of God is living and active and that it separates what is soulish (merely human) from what is truly spiritual.
  • The great Bible translator, St Jerome says, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."
We all need this kind of guidance for our walk with God, especially with the proliferation of knowledge, much if not most of it false or tainted, that bombards us in this modern era through all mediums of communication. So many are confused or deceived.
Before we know it the New Year will be upon us. I recommend you do as I did. Determine to read the Bible from cover to cover in a year, reading selections from both the Old and the New Testaments along with a Psalm or chapter of Proverbs each day of the journey - pretty much the way the readings are arranged at Mass, but with NOTHING MISSED AND NO REPETITIONS.
